WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT
STATESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
MONDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 1875

It is a long story, but the facts are in a nutshell.  When the Turks crossed from Asia into Europe, some five hundred years ago, they drove the Christian population into the Danubian Principalities.  For several centuries this population was kept in harsh subjection by their Mahomedan rulers.  But as the Sultan's government grew weaker, the people of the principalities have risen at intervals to throw of(f) the Turkish yoke.  In part of the providences of Wallachia, Toumania and Servia, they have been successful, and so, native sovereign reign there under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Government.
