THE TURKS RAMPAGE
ATLANTA
GEORGIA
SUNDAY
29 JUNE 1873
Vienna, June
28.- Anarchy prevails in the Turkish province of Boshia, caused by the
persecution of Christians by Mohammedans. In one district of the
province two hundred and seventy Christians have been murdered within
the past six weeks, and the perpetrators of these crimes remain
unpunished. The foreign representatives to Turkey demand an
investigation, and call upon the authorities to protect the persecuted
people. These murders have greatly alarmed the christians in the
province and many of them are immigrating.
THE
HERZEGOVINAN TROUBLE
WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT
STATESVILLE,
NORTH CAROLINA
MONDAY
SEPTEMBER 6, 1875
It is a long story, but the
facts are in a nutshell. When the Turks crossed from Asia into
Europe, some five hundred years ago, they drove the Christian
population into the Danubian Principalities. For several
centuries this population was kept in harsh subjection by their
Mahomedan rulers. But as the Sultan's government grew weaker, the
people of the principalities have risen at intervals to throw of(f) the
Turkish yoke. In part of the providences of Wallachia, Toumania
and Servia, they have been successful, and so, native sovereign reign
there under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Government.
In
Herzegovina the Christian population outnumber the Turks by about five
to one. The Turks being the dominant power, however, have ruled
them, as it were, with a rod of iron. The Christian population
are Sclaves, the same race as Hungary, and it is not surprising,
therefore, that they have given evidences lately of a desire to
be annexed to that branch of the Austrian Empire. If the
Christian population of these principalities were left to themselves
they would soon throw off allegiance to Turkey, but the Russian,
English and Austrian governments claim to have something to say in the
matter. Russia wants the provinces but the England objects to Russian
influences extending further into southeastern Europe. It was an
attempt on the part of Russian claiming a protectorate over the
Christian population of Turkey, it will be remembered, which led to the
Crimean War. Austria-Hungary also covets the provinces, and so,
between them all, there are all the little elements of a quarrel which,
in its ultimate results, may be felt far beyond the confines of
