The wholesale massacres that have
recently taken place in Syria may well arrest the attention of the
Christian world, and the fact that France and England have resolved to
interfere to prevent further atrocities will be hailed with
approval. The work of extermination has been remorselessly
pursued from Sidon to Zahleh, and French, English, Russian and American
citizens, with many thousand Christian subjects of the Porte, have
fallen victims to the Druses and other savage races of Lebanon. A
letter from Jaffa, 21st of June, states that Palestine already feels
the effect of the horrible scenes in the Lebanon, and no Christian of
Damascus dares leave his house for fear of a rising of the fanatical
Musselmens of that great city. A body of 5,000 Bedouin Saks are
ravaging Tiberiade and the neighborhood, and serious fears are
entertained for Nazareth and the towns in the interior.
The subject of the
Syrian massacres was brought up in the British Parliament on the 10th,
and it was stated that Admiral Martin had been ordered with a squadron
to the coast of Syrian, to take such steps as might be necessary for
the protection of the British subjects, and the French government had
also sent some ships of war for the same purpose for the same purpose
to that coast. England had also been in communication with the
Governments of Turkey, Russia, Prussia, Austria, and France,, as to the
measure which will become necessary.
The Rev Dr Thomson
writes to the N.Y Observer from Beirut, June 20th, that the European
ships of war are beginning to assemble, and the Consuls have received
orders to all act in concert and stop the war. He says - "It is
expected that Russia and france will act separately from England,
Austria and Prussia, and the downfall of the whole Turkish Empire may
be looked for.
