EARTHQUAKES IN THE BIBLE

EARTHQUAKE \b0 (Heb. \i raash, quaking; \i0 Gr. \i seismos, earthquake\i0 ). There are four actual earthquakes recorded in Scripture:

the one for Elijah's benefit (1 Kings 19:11);
the one referred to by Amos (1:1) and Zechariah (14:5) as occurring in the reign of Uzziah;
the one that happened at Christ's resurrection (Matt 28:2);
and the one that freed Paul and Silas from prison (Acts 16:26).

Earthquakes may be used by God in judgment. All natural phenomenon--earthquake, wind, storm, rain, hail, and the rest-- are under divine sovereign control and are part of his armory for ruling the world in righteousness.

EX 19:18:Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently,

NU 16:31-34: As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart 32and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions. 33They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!"

1 SAM 14:15: Then panic struck the whole army--those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties--and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God

1 KINGS 19:11:Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.

PS 68:8: the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.

PS 77:18: Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.

PS 114:4-7: the mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. Why was it, O sea, that you fled, O Jordan, that you turned back, you mountains, that you skipped like rams, you hills, like lambs?
Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water.

ISA 29:6: Suddenly, in an instant, the LORD Almighty will come with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with windstorm and tempest and flames of a devouring fire.

EZE 38:19: In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel.

AMOS 1:1: The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa--what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash\up4 A\up0 was king of Israel.

ZECH 14:5: You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquakeA in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

MATT 24:7: Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains.

MATT 27:54: When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the SonE of God!"

MATT 28:2: There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it

MARK 13:8: Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

LUKE 21:11: There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

ACTS 16:26: Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken.

HEB 12:26: At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens."E 27The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken--that is, created things--so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

REV 6:12: I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.

REV 8:5: Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

REV 11:13: At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

REV 16:18: Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since man has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake.
